Plymouth Corinthian Cycling Club is one of the oldest clubs in the country, forming in 1892 with locals riding and racing around the county of Devon. Recent years has seen more and more members meeting on a Sunday morning during winter months, battling against the elements to get in some solid winter miles for racing in the warmer months. Rides meet at Elburton Hotel at 9.00am every Sunday.
The aim of our club is to promote cycling as a social, recreational and competitive activity. Our members interests include many aspects of cycling including Time Trials, Road Racing, Mountain Biking, Cyclo-Sportives and Audax riding. New members are always welcome, so why not link up with one of the rides or contact us for more details.
Dick Henly
On January 23 2010 Dick passed away at the age of eighty-three in Ottawa Ontario Canada. Dick was a member of the club between 1945 and 1955 and enjoyed good results throughout that time, 1947 & 1948 being especially good years in which he was best club rider.
Dick represented England in the 1951 World Amateur Road Race Championships in Varese Italy. Also in 1951 on a domestic level he won the King of the Mountains and was in the winning England B Team of the now discontinued Isle of Man races. His King of the Mountains win was a very good achievement for a rider who was 12 ½ stone and 6’1”.
Dick also road in the Route de France race which was a predecessor to the Tour de L’Avenir. This was a two week stage race for amateurs and one which Dick sustained a serious injury when he crashed whilst descending the Col du Galibier.
After emigrating to Canada in the 1960's Dick joined the Royal Canadian Navy as a Naval Architect until his retirement. Dick was still an active cyclist in his later years with the Ottawa Bicycle Club.
Adrian Sluman wins at Portreath (3/4) !!! Excellent !
