Fine weather blessed this race run on the old and new A30 close to Honiton. Jon Wynn, blown out of the previous days pursuit race in the early miles, still combined well enough with Andy Winterbottom to beat Andrew Parker and Simon Aske by 38 seconds. They in turn had 30 seconds to spare over the third placed team. There were a few long faces when the organisers allotted the prizes as per the rule-book. This meant it was only teams from the same club that were eligible for the many awards. The composite teams had to settle for one and that went to navy man Sean Childs who rode with Mid-Devon's Mark Sanders to take that prize.

1st vet on target : Ray Retter North Devon Wheelers +6-07
Despite strong south westerly winds blowing in off the Atlantic Chris Murphy, St. Austell Wheelers, had little trouble in winning the 21 mile Rudy Project South West qualifying race around a 21 mile circuit to the North of Wadebridge. The Cornishman who rents out cycles for leisure use on the nearby Camel Trail lead from the gun. By the time the riders had reached the top of Washaway Hill, 3.5 miles, he had a lead of 33 seconds over Alex Fitzgerald and 43 seconds over Ian Deakin Both riders from the Mid-Devon. Fitzgerald's effort was more of a token one for he and his travelling companion, Mark Sanders were unable to find the race HQ so both accumulated hefty time penalties ruling them out of the overall results. From the top of the hill to Valley Truckle the wind was on the rider's backs making it easy going. The last miles down into the Allen Valley and then back up to the high ground at St. Kew were a different story right into the teeth of the wind. It made little difference to Murphy who extended his lead to win by 2 mins 18 seconds and set a course record by 2 mins 7 secs.

| | | | | | | | | | | North Devon Whs Sporting '31.6'
Sun 29/3
Off number three in starting order, the promoting club's veteran Ray Retter quickly took controland held on for a 15 second winning margin in North Devon Wheelers time trial over a sporting 31.6 mile course based in Barnstaple.
After pre-race favourite Greg Sandy had phoned in with his apologies, it was Steven Sage (Okehampton CC) who took over the mantle of top seed, but he was unable to match Retter's 1-19-22 on an excellent day, marred only - and unusually for this course - by a stiff easterly breeze. Riders took full advantage of a stretch of newly resurfaced road on the outward leg, on the A377, which will form part of the course for the National 50-mile Championship in 2004.
Leign Pinchen (Somerset RC) was a further 1-13 down on Sage in third place.
On the one rider, one prize basis. Chris Barretto (PCCC), in fourth place overall, took the fastest veteran award rather than Retter. Barretto was also fastest on veterans target time, but the award went to Ken Robertson (MDCC).

Stags Head RR
Greg Sandy Team Endurasport.com racked up another victory in the North Devon Wheelers Stags Head Road Race at South Molton on Sunday. An impressive two man break initiated by Nigel Polkinghorne/Team Training FX on the second lap of the seven lap race failed to be caught by the persuanit bunch despite several strong attempts. The two riders were briefly assisted by Adrian Sluman/Team Training FX who eventually drifted back to the bunch to save himself for efforts later in the race. They had opened a 30 sec gap within half lap and never looked like being caught.
A solo attempt by Rob Tayler/Alltrax initiated a reaction from Stephen Wedge/Exeter Wheelers, Alan Ryder/Plymouth Corinthians CC and Andrew Parker/Mid Devon CC. After chasing the two leaders for a lap these four were caught by the main field again. With several more unsuccesful attempts by riders to make an impression in the lead, it was again Andrew Parker and this time Steven Sage/Okehampton CC who made the next serious effort. These two quickly opened useful gap but Sage was unable to stick with Parker's pace on the Stags Head climb on the penultimate lap. Parkers third place looked fairly secure starting the last lap, but the main field had other ideas. They chased him down all the way round the final lap to ensure they were in a position to fight for third place.
Meanwhile the two leaders who made their lead look like a Sunday club run had opened a near two minute gap on the bunch by the finish. Polkinghorne made a valiant effort to hold off Sandy in the two up sprint but Sandy was the stronger of the riders and took the win by a length.
The main field came in at 1:39, and was led in by Adrian Sluman, closely followed by Andrew Parker, James William/Private and Gerry Bowditch/www.bikeshop.uk.com.

UNDER 23 NATIONAL SERIES: ROUND 1 23rd March, Penzance Wheelers, Cornwall (UK)
Kerian Page riding for Great Britain has won the first round of the National Series for Under 23 riders held in Penzance, Cornwall (UK). The race winning break developed between laps 3 and 4 when a very strong group comprising Page, Graham Briggs and Ben Greenwood (both Life Repair), Owen Wallace, (Great Britain), Adam Illingworth and James Flanagan (both Team Milton Keynes) and Ross Adams got away and quickly pulled away from the rest of the field.
On the final lap, with the finish looming, there was a little sparing going on on the climbs and at one point, it was reported that Page was dropped and that the two Team Milton Keynes boys were away but within a mile of the finish, it all came back together and Page made no mistake in the finish, and he just edged it in front of James Flanagan and Briggs.
