EWCC Sporting '15

Andrew Parker led a Mid-Devon Cycling Club / Colin Lewis “Bonanza” at the Exeter Wheelers promoted Sporting 15 mile Time Trial as the club took 5 of the 8 prizes on offer. The wind was still blasting from the North East and temperatures were close to 5 degrees as riders set off from Pocombe Bridge at near sea level. It was on their backs as they made their way steadily uphill to the turn at Cheriton Bishop and at a height of 550 feet. By the time that the riders had got there Parker was well in the lead. He had taken 20 mins 23 seconds and had a 21 second advantage over team mate Adam Holmes. The next competitors were fellow Mid-Devon man, Rowan Boswood and the 2003 winner Nigel Polkinghorne, Team Alcan / Bianchi. They were 27 seconds slower than Parker. The return to the finish was into the worst of the elements – the wind was especially strong along the open top section of the course. This failed to slow Parker’s progress and he finished in 38 mins 24 seconds and a beating of Polkinghorne’s course record by 4 seconds. 20 year old Holmes continued to build on his lead over his closest rivals and his finishing time was 39 mins 15 seconds and earned him the “fastest Junior/Espoir” prize. Holmes’ time was 19 seconds faster than Polkinhghorne who, prior to the race, had complained of “tired legs” from his hard work in the previous day’s Springtime Pursuit. The Team Alcan man’s 2004 effort was just over 1 minute slower than in 2003 – as were most riders – a measure of the testing conditions. Boswood took fourth place ahead of Mid-Devon man, Mike Parker. Parker’s time of 41 mins 14 seconds was good enough for the “fastest 50+ veteran. The first veteran in the 60+ class was Ken Robertson with a time of 47 mins 26 seconds. Spoiling the Mid-Devon clean sweep of the prizes were Adrian Clode, Sid Valley C.C. who was the best 40+ rider with a time of 41 mins 19 secs and National Veteran’s 12 hour Champion, Ray Retter. Retter, North Devon Wheelers was the winner of the best veteran on age standard. His plus was3 mins 43 seconds and he beat Mike Parker for this prize by 6 seconds.

CVCC Hilly '22'

Despite having spent the previous two weeks abroad ship, Royal Marine Ian Houvenaghel (Camel Valley) was a convincing winner of his club's sporting 22-mile event at Wadebridge, Cornwall, a district round of the Rudy Project Series.

Houvenaghel was almost a minute faster than his nearest rival over the sporting course which took the riders along the A389 and B3266 across the north side of Bodmin Moor before turning back along the A39.

Second place went to Robert Taylor (Alltrax), who made the fastest start and reached the timekeeper at the top of the first climb (2.5 miles) in just 11:50.

Houvenaghel was roughly level with Taylor over the first half of the course, but opened up his winning margin with a quick descent towards Wadebridge.

1st Corrie was Chris Barretto who finished in a time of 1:01:33 to take the Vets on target prize +3.32. 2nd Corrie was Paul Davis who finished in a time

Common consent among the expereince riders was that these were the windiest conditions that they had ever ridden making the TVCRA series opener promoted by Team Tor 2000 very tough for all concerned, riders and officials. Taking over 20 minutes to complete the first 2 laps of the 3.5 mile circuit, the E,1,2 group stayed together, but soon after the start of the third lap an ejection of pace from the bunch saw the group shatter with the pair Roy Smith (Team Training FX) and eventual race winner Greg Sandy (Team Alcan) on there own. With under a lap to go, Greg Sandy applied the pressure and left Roy standing in his wake, crossing the line an impressive minute clear.

In the 3rd/Junior race with constant attacking, the bunch was splitting and reforming throughout the race. In the end persistence, paid off for Rex Facey (First Chard Wheelers) finishing around 15 seconds ahead of the only bunch sprint of the day won, which was won by William Hornby (Mid Devon CC) who is looking strong to regain his second cat license. In the 4th Cat race the riders with strength showed early on with the race splitting apart from the gun. The eventual top 5 staying together to the end. When the final sprint stretched them out which made the judges life easy. Other riders finished in ones and two’s, showing some great resilience to just get to the finish line, well done to all.

Event 2 in the TVCRA Ilton Series is the Somerset RC event on 3rd May details are in the British Cycling Calendar.
